Just across the bay from the NBA champion Golden State Warriors, there’s another team of Warriors who only play on their home turf. This team is made up of inmates from San Quentin Prison, whose lives were thrown off course by felony convictions, despite some having shown great potential in basketball. The challenging journey towards rehabilitation is the central theme of this enlightening and motivational documentary. “Q Ball” highlights the stories of determined individuals confronting the weight of their past actions while striving for redemption. The film particularly focuses on Harry “ATL” Smith, a standout player nearing parole who still holds onto his NBA aspirations; Anthony “Ant” Ammons, a life-sentenced inmate who has taken on a mentoring role for younger prisoners; and head coach Rafael Cuevas, a convicted murderer who is committed to preparing his players for life beyond prison walls. For these three men, the team represents more than just a pastime; it is a surrogate family.
