A young and driven civil servant named Jussi finds himself responsible for overseeing the environmental permit for a massive nickel and uranium mining project in Northern Finland. The Talvivaara mine, spearheaded by the charismatic and globe-trotting visionary Pekka Perä, is implementing a groundbreaking mineral extraction technique while also providing employment opportunities in one of Scandinavia’s most impoverished regions. As Jussi delves deeper, he realizes he has been misled by several individuals and that the innovative method has significant unforeseen drawbacks. The mine is causing environmental issues that are being kept under wraps. Jussi is presented with a new permit application from the same mine, accompanied by an intriguing job offer and the prospect of a fresh start. He must decide whether to go along with the situation and, if so, whom to align himself with.
