In the late 1960s and early 1970s, Frank Serpico, an NYPD officer, exposed the widespread corruption and bribery within the police force. He was infamously shot in the face during a drug bust and became the central figure of Sidney Lumet’s iconic film, “SERPICO.” More than four decades later, Serpico reflects on his Southern Italian heritage and childhood, his experiences working undercover, and his life after leaving the NYPD, which took him to Europe and eventually upstate New York. The documentary also features insights from his former colleagues, childhood friends, West Side neighbors, and admirers like writer Luc Sante and actor John Turturro. With exclusive access to Serpico and enhanced by original music from Jack White and a score by Brendan Canty of Fugazi, Antonino D’Ambrosio crafts a striking and compelling depiction of a dedicated public servant who continues to live by his principles in his own distinctive manner.
