In the contemporary setting of Shubei town in southeast China, Liu Chuan makes a discreet return five years after absconding with RMB 800,000 from a bank heist. During the robbery, policeman Wang Laoshi was on duty and subsequently faced demotion for allowing Liu to escape. Now, Wang continues to work at the local police station, keeping a vigilant watch for Liu. Coincidentally, Liu ends up staying at a modest lodging in Wang’s jurisdiction, where Qin Xiaosong, a psychology graduate who has fled her overbearing parents, is also residing. The following day, Wang spots Liu on the street and pursues him, eventually apprehending him in an abandoned warehouse. Just then, an earthquake strikes the town, causing the building to collapse. Wang is rendered unconscious, and Liu seizes the opportunity to take his uniform.
