Guan Zhiguo (played by Zhang Guoli), a retired geologist who has recently lost his spouse, looks forward to the yearly summer gathering with his four children. However, each of them calls to cancel their visit. Determined to see them, he leaves his home in a Beijing courtyard to check on his family.
