This film offers a depiction of the late Bradford playwright Andrea Dunbar, who candidly and courageously chronicled her experiences growing up on the infamous Buttershaw Estate in Bradford. Dubbed ‘a genius straight from the slums,’ Dunbar passed away tragically at the age of 29 in 1990, leaving behind her ten-year-old daughter, Lorraine. “The Arbor” revisits the Buttershaw Estate three decades after Dunbar’s original play, narrating the compelling true story of both the playwright and her daughter. At 29, Lorraine found herself alienated from her mother’s family and serving time in prison while undergoing rehabilitation. As she reconnects with her mother’s plays and letters, the film traces Lorraine’s introspective journey as she contemplates her own life and gains insight into the challenges her mother endured.
