Britain is caught in the throes of a severe economic downturn, marked by decreasing incomes, increasing costs, and social turmoil, while only the bankers seem content. The year is 1783, and Ross Poldark comes back to Cornwall from fighting in the American War of Independence, only to discover his life in shambles: his father has passed away, the family mine has been shut down for some time, his home is in disrepair, and his former love is engaged to his cousin. Yet, amidst the rugged and stunning Cornish scenery, Ross discovers that hope and love can emerge when least anticipated.
