Based on real events, ‘Tot altijd’ takes us back to the 1980s, where a group of friends revels in the joys and challenges of youth and their often chaotic romantic lives. Fast forward several years, and we find Thomas, a newly minted medical graduate, caught in a difficult situation when he diagnoses his closest friend, Mario, with Multiple Sclerosis (MS). Although not immediately life-threatening, the disease gradually erodes the patient’s physical abilities and, in some instances, their mental faculties. Mario emerges as a prominent advocate for the “Waardig Sterven” (“Dignified Death”) movement, which campaigns for the legalization of euthanasia in Belgium. Meanwhile, Thomas is determined to do everything he can to keep his best friend from slipping away, yet he struggles to witness Mario’s relentless decline.
